Palm Trees Project, an art exhibition inspired by the numerous palm trees that have been killed by the palm weevil across the Algarve, has been inaugurated in Faro.
Since 2007, when the killer bug Rhynchophorus Ferruginus was introduced to Portugal, presumably originating from the south of Spain, hundreds of palm trees have had to be felled in order to put a stop to the plague.
Aware of the “tremendous impact” the weevil has had on the Algarve’s palm trees, international association Peace and Art Society (PAS), based in Faro, has decided to launch a creative initiative to bring worldwide recognition to the “tragedy”.
The concept is to install artistic creations near felled trees. A total of 15 artists from Portugal, Wales, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil and Israel have taken part in the project, with their work to be displayed near the prison establishment and along the pedestrian area between the roundabout and Luís de Camões square.
