Pinky Steede to perform in grand night of variety

Born in Bermuda, Pinky Steede, a diminutive ball of energy, has travelled her big voice all over the world and although the Auditorium of Lagoa is not new to her, she is looking forward to her return. Algarve author and organiser of the upcoming Grand Variety Show, Jenny Grainer, interviews Pinky Steede:

After a life working across some of the world’s most famous night spots why do you like the Auditorium in Lagoa?

It has great acoustics and it is easy to create an intimate relationship with my audience, which is very important to me. In fact, it’s almost like working in a night club. It’s true I have appeared in many of the top hotels and night clubs around the world, mainly in USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia. I’ve also worked in the West End of London in the musical ‘Bubbling Brown Sugar’ and the Asian version of the musical ‘Guys and Dolls’, however I started out in some very humble places and Lagoa is luxurious by comparison and, as I’ve already said, has great sound and technicians. Besides which it’s all in aid of a great cause.

How did you get started in Portugal?

When we moved here, I didn’t want to stop working, but I realised I had no contacts and it would not be so easy. Fortunately my London contacts were well known here and the offers were soon coming in.

I did seasons at the casinos in Vilamoura, Monte Gordo, Figueira da Foz and also Espinho. Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to sing at the Montechoro Hotel, Meridien, Hotel Porto, Holiday Inn and Hotel Oura Praia, to name but a few.

Five years ago I was invited by the Chinese government’s cultural arm to be a part of a company touring their major cities. It was a wonderful experience and certainly one I won’t forget. The kind of music I sing seems to get through to all – even the Chinese. I was also very flattered when in 2009 I received great recognition in my home country and was inducted into the Bermuda music hall of fame.”

How is your Portuguese?

After living in Portugal for 17 years I can speak enough to communicate with my audiences but I wouldn’t like to attempt Fado just yet…
