Police cars lack insurance

Special police patrol cars that keep an eye on schoolchildren have been withdrawn because the vehicles have no insurance.

PSP police in Faro ordered the Escola Segura (Safe School) cars to stop last month.

Faro Civil Governor Isilda Gomes said she did not understand why the PSP had taken this action as PSP and GNR police cars are not compelled to have motor insurance because they are government property.

The commander of the PSP police in Faro, Vítor Rodrigues, told Lusa news agency: “The vehicles will start to run again soon with temporary insurance organised by and paid for by police.”
