A national operation to promote safety among the elderly population entitled ‘Idosos em Segurança 2013’ was introduced last week by the GNR police and will run until the end of October.
As part of the operation, GNR officers will be running several campaigns, which include closer contact with the elderly, either at their homes or in places where they can get them together as a group.
These meetings are aimed at raising awareness among the senior population about topics such as theft, fraud and burglary and what to do if such situations occur.
Besides offering advice about these subjects, officers will also be handing out senior cards with contact numbers for the policemen involved in the operation.
According to information gathered by the GNR in its 2013 Senior Census, there are 28,197 senior citizens living isolated or alone throughout the country.
Out of the total, 19,445 live alone, 6,565 live in isolated areas and 2,177 reside alone in isolated areas.
