Police chasing a 40-year old man for a burglary offence saved his life when he jumped a railway fence and fell on the track in the path of an oncoming train at Faro station.
A bystander told Diário de Notícias newspaper: “I saw police jump the fence and run to rescue the man who was helpless on the track. He was saved from certain death by a matter of split seconds.”
The man had broken three windows of a veterinary clinic located next to the Faro train station in an attempt to steal from inside. The owner of the clinic was inside the building at the time and immediately called the PSP police, who quickly arrived at the scene in two vehicles.
When the man realised the police were closing in on him he fled from the building and badly judged his jump over the train station fence.
The incident occurred on October 6 shortly after 10.22pm.
