Portimão area shines through this summer

PORTIMÃO APPEARS to be the place to be this summer as residents and tourists have their pick of the most exciting events for all ages and tastes, from sports to music festivals.

Sporting events begin today (July 27) at Praia da Rocha with the final leg of the National Beach Football Tournament and All Star Games, which are due to continue until Sunday, July 29. The sports area of Praia da Rocha is expected to be buzzing for the third João Moutinho Beach Football Tournament, from 10am until 7pm, tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

On August 4, a 1,200m swimming race in the sea is due to take place and contestants can sign up for this race on the day from 10am, or prior to this date email info@portinado.com. For all the volleyball fans, a competition has been scheduled from August 24 to 26 at Praia da Rocha.

The riverside walkway will see the start of Portugal’s only professional cycling race, Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta, on August 5, at 11.40am. Kite Masters Portimão World Tour 2007 will continue until tomorrow (July 28) at Alvor beach and there is also a windsurfing festival at Portimão riverside throughout the day, which is due to continue until July 29.

The Breitling Med Cup Transpac 52 Class sailing competition is due to take place at Portimão marina between August 20 and 25 and, on September 21 until 23, the third international big game fishing championship is due to take place, followed by the final leg of the Powerboat P1 competition from September 28 to 30.

A culinary and musical delight awaits those at Expo Vinhos Portimão Wine Festival, from August 14 until 19 at Praia da Rocha, from 8pm until 2am. Caribbean, Flamenco, Jazz and Fado music are just some of the genres which will be featured but if you cannot wait to hear your favourite jazz tunes, head to Alvor beach this Saturday and Sunday at 10pm.

The annual Sardine Festival will run from August 3 until 12 with music from Rui Veloso among others and an appearance from popular television personality Herman José.

Chilean ballet is due to take place at the municipal auditorium on August 14 and at Portimão Arena, an ABBA tribute band promises to delight fans on August 17.

Portimão riverside is due to host a book fair until August 17 and the World Press Photo exhibition (read article on page 2) will continue until August 12. A street theatre festival is also due to take place today (Friday) with a special performance to entertain the crowds.
