Portimão project possible prize winner

A pioneering project in Portimão to make the city accessible to people with disabilities has been shortlisted by the Portuguese Tourism Board as one of the top initiatives in the country.

Accessible Portimão, which was officially inaugurated in October 2010, aims for complete social inclusion throughout the city centre and covers a five kilometre route suitable for wheelchair users and including information in Braille.

Portimão Câmara invested €300,000 into the project and the municipality hopes to be awarded the top prize in the service category of the awards which celebrate initiatives within Portugal that help to strengthen the tourism sector.

Results of the awards will be announced during a ceremony to be held in Lisbon on February 23.
