Portimão promises “construction-free” summer

No major construction works will take place during the peak summer season, the council vows

With the arrival of summer and thousands of visitors expected, the municipal council of Portimão has announced that no major construction works will take place in the town’s main areas for the next three months.

The goal is to ensure smooth, stress-free circulation for residents, shop owners, and tourists alike, the council says in a statement.

Thanks to a well-coordinated effort between contractors and municipal teams, several ongoing projects were either completed ahead of schedule or strategically paused, the local authority says, adding that many of these took place during the winter months.

Among the projects already wrapped up are the revamp of the Quinta do Pinheiro Urbanisation, upgrades on Rua Montalvão Marques, renovations around Portimão Church (awaiting final wall work), and the repaving of EM 531 (minor demolition still happening but with zero impact on traffic, the council says).

However, some interventions are still ongoing, due to be completed by the end of July, namely on Rua Bento Jesus Caraça, Rua Heróis da Restauração, behind Avenida 25 de Abril (near the Geliglu café), and on a stretch of Avenida Fernando Pessoa (in front of Júdice Fialho School).

At Praia da Rocha, works continue at Jardim da Fortaleza, the garden near the Santa Cantarina Fortress. The good news is that the pedestrian beach access in that area should reopen safely by mid-to-late July, and that all other seven beach accesses in Praia da Rocha are completely open. As for the fortress, a structural rehabilitation project is in the works and may even begin during the summer. But council officials promise it won’t affect pedestrian access or public enjoyment of this historic spot.

On a closing note, the council thanks the local community for their understanding during the past few months, which have seen a wide range of works being carried out – affecting traffic significantly. Says the council, many projects were urgent or had to be fast-tracked due to technical or funding windows. “The joint effort of the population was key, ensuring that Portimão is now able to welcome the summer without major constraints.”
