BRITISH NEWSPAPER, the Financial Times, has come under fire from Portuguese minister of the economy Manuel Pinho (pictured) after the paper referred to Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain by using the acronym PIGS in a short article.
The controversy began after an article surrounding the current economic situation in the four southern European countries entitled ‘Pigs in Muck’ was printed in the Financial Times on September 1.
Manuel Pinho told journalists: “Quite frankly I am offended by the term PIGS in reference to my country.”
Finacial commentatorsfrom the Finacial Times, the Lex team have responded to the criticisms and told The Resident: “Some imagined that Lex invented this pejorative acronym. In fact it dates from the late 1990’s and even has its own Wikipedia entry. Lex apologises for any offence caused – none was intended.”
