PORTIMÃO, CASTELO Branco and Santarém prisons were officially closed on January 31 and staff and prisoners transferred to other establishments across Portugal.
These alterations are part of a remodelling and modernisation process for penal establishments such as Portimão’s, which the government says do not have the necessary security measures and conditions for prisoners.
