Protest nation

Thousands of anti-austerity demonstrators marched in Lisbon and Porto last Saturday to protest against measures implemented by the government as part of its bailout programme with international lenders. The demonstrations, organised by civic movement ‘Screw the Troika’ (Que Se Lixe a Troika), were held without incident, said the police authorities. Around 20,000 people are believed to have taken part. This was the second consecutive weekend marked by anti-austerity protests in Portugal (see last week’s edition).
