Quercus eco group demands more investment

PORTUGUESE ENVIRONMENTAL group Quercus has called for greater public investment to conserve natural habitats and protect endangered species.

The group claims that even with the introduction of the Habitats Directive 10 years ago, the overall “panorama in Portugal is extremely worrying.”

In a report on the European Union Habitats Directive 2001-2006, the environmental association draws attention to the “unfavourable state of conservation” of various habitats and species in Portugal and criticises the “high absence of available information” while at the same time calling on the Portuguese state to “fulfil the promises and obligations it made internationally on protecting the environment.”

“Around 60 per cent of habitats and 33 per cent of species covered in the different bio-geographical areas of Portugal are at risk because of unfavourable environmental conditions,” argues Quercus.
