FOOD SAFETY officers from ASAE shut down Kasablanca restaurant, which is part of Klube-K nightclub in Vilamoura, last Thursday (August 16) as it was not licensed.
Residents, who have a case against the nightclub’s noise levels being investigated by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), say that the noise is less since the restaurant was closed.
Local resident Sally Sykes, who spearheaded the ECHR investigation, told The Resident that loud music has played from Klube-K between midnight and 7am throughout the summer, but since ASAE shut down the restaurant, the music has been turned down at 4.30am and completely turned off at 5am.
An ASAE spokesperson confirmed that Kasablanca was shut down last Thursday due to inconsistencies in licensing. He told Resident reporter Natasha Smith: “The restaurant will continue to be closed until it acquires the appropriate licences from the câmara”. He also confirmed that, last year, the restaurant was closed due to poor hygiene and no licence (see The Resident September 1, 2006).
The Câmara has declined to comment to The Resident regarding the restaurant’s licensing issues and allegations that Klube-K’s noise levels are above the legal maximum limits.
Residents have speculated that the music is being turned down earlier because nightclub bosses fear that ASAE is now monitoring them, which suggests that noise levels were above the legal limit.
