Re: Salgados and Royal Marine cases

Dear Editor,

So the Salgados development has been approved. Surprised? No, the decision was made years ago in Lisbon. Politics, money, connections among the elite…

The environmental study was always a waste, dressing. The verdict made before the study is like elections in places like Zimbabwe. What might stop it is simply money – investors not interested.

Construction, resort developments and sales of real estate are too low and there are too many vacant buildings. I admire the new Silves President (CM) but she knows that her predecessors did the damage and the developers are not prepared to listen – “we will get our own way”.

But if a proper fund to fight it, perhaps in court, was set up – as is needed in the 1864 cliff/river law grab – I would contribute.

Briefly: while I sympathise with John Hawker (letter to the Editor) and understand over his father, it is not related to the Royal Marine (UK) being found guilty and properly sentenced. He said: “I’ve just broken the Geneva Convention.” So it was simply premeditated murder. He must take the due sentence, as must the GNR officer who shot a nine-year-old innocent boy.

Those legally possessing guns have an extra duty to the public and should be well trained. Best way, don’t draw it.
