EUROPEAN REGIONAL leaders are expected to meet in the Algarve next September, under the Portuguese rotation presidency of the European Union.
The Committee of the Regions (CoR) meetings will take place in Vilamoura on September 6 and 7, with around 100 leaders attending to discuss many of the Portuguese presidency agenda items concerning local and regional issues.
The administrative regions model, already existing in some of the member states, and the implementation of that model in countries like Portugal is expected to be the main theme of a special meeting with the president of the Committee of the Regions, Michel Delebarre, on September 6.
On September 7, the EU Committee of the Regions will gather all 27 member-state representatives in Vilamoura during the morning. For the afternoon, the programme is expected to include a tour of Tavira and the Ria Formosa.
The Committee of the Regions was created at the Maastricht Summit in 1991 and became a reality in 1994.
Since then, regions, towns and local authorities have, by way of their representatives, been able to take part in the Community’s decision-making process.
