Regionalisation a talking point

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Minister Nunes Correia and former EU Commissioner Vitorino are to address the Committee of the Regions Bureau (CoR) in Vilamoura on September 6 and 7.

The extraordinary meeting is at the invitation of Carlos Tuta, President of the Portuguese national delegation of the CoR and President of Monchique Câmara. Portugal’s Minister for Environment and Regional Development, Francisco Nunes Correia, and former EU Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner António Vitorino will be among the main speakers.

Debate

The two-day event opens with a debate on future prospects for regionalisation in Portugal, with contributions by CoR President Michel Delebarre, members of the Assembleia da República and Câmara leaders.

The issue of regionalisation continues to be a talking point in political circles despite the outcome of the 1998 referendum on the creation of eight administrative mainland regions (63.5 per cent voted against the proposal). There have since been calls for the establishment of four mainland regions in addition to the existing overseas autonomous regions of Azores and Madeira.

Other topics to be discussed include the creation of a forum of local and regional authorities aimed at boosting political, economic and cultural ties in the southern Mediterranean and a report on the Open Days European Week of Regions and Cities, to be held in October in Brussels.

The event takes place at the Tivoli Marinotel, Vilamoura.
