Residents win battle of mobile phone mast

Residents from the Vila Serena residential area of Praia da Luz have won the right to have a mobile phone mast erected close to their homes removed.

Resident Luís Cardoso told the Algarve Resident: “We found out the news on May 12 when we received a letter from Lagos Câmara declaring that the mast would be removed from where it currently stands.”

He added: “The antenna is due to be taken down in the next week and all the residents here are very happy that it will no longer be in our area and that the pavement it was obstructing will become accessible gain.”

A registered letter from Lagos Câmara stated that: “It is with compliments that the President of the Câmara informs you that the equipment referred to (the antenna) will be removed.”

Illegal

The mast was first erected in the residential area in January and since then the residents have been in talks with Lagos Câmara to have it removed.

Luís Cardoso said: “The mast was illegal and the law had to be obeyed.  I have a belief in the system which applies for everyone here, even politicians, and if you follow the right procedures and do not threaten people then eventually you will win when the law is on your side.”

The concerned residents met with Lagos mayor on February 25 where the situation was discussed and the mayor agreed to meet with representatives from the company responsible for placing the mast in its position.

Luís Cardoso said: “We would like to thank Lagos Mayor, Júlio Barroso and Lagos Câmara for their help with this situation. The system really does work!”
