Flat tyres and frayed nerves are sending residents in Santa Bárbara de Nexe right round the bend. TV station RTP has reported on their plight, brought on by long-running repairs to the town’s sewage and water system.
The station reported on how as a result of seemingly endless construction work many roads have been uprooted, with tar only on one lane while the other is filled with rocks and dirt.
“We have two-way traffic going on half of the road around corners. It is extremely dangerous,” said a local resident.
Flat tyres are commonplace, while fears for safety have led to angry demands for Faro borough council to take charge.
Faro Mayor Rogério Bacalhau confirmed to RTP that the situation has gone on so long because the company in charge of the work went bankrupt. He stressed his municipality was now “on the case” and that the roads should be fully operational by January 2014.
