Almancil International Rotary Club has started a fund for underprivileged children in the Algarve and, on June 2, launched a BigBANG Charity Event to raise money for the fund. The club’s President, Leif B Axelsson, described the event as a fantastic success, thanks to sponsors, donors, golfers, dinner guests and members, who raised a total of 13,500 euros.
The fund is now open to applications for support of underprivileged children (this includes a single child or group of children) in the Algarve. All applications will be administered by a special committee, which holds responsibility for the fund. This committee will approve an application in co-operation with the recipient and, when satisfied that the grant has 100 per cent met the child’s needs, will directly pay the supplier.
Application forms are available from charity@rotaryalmancil.org or from the Almancil International Rotary Club, c/o Restaurant Couleur France, Vale D’Éguas, 8135-022 Almancil.
As a tribute to the immense success of the BigBANG Charity Event, the Rotary Club intends to boost the initial fund by holding a similar charity event on an annual basis.
This year’s BigBANG Charity Event began at Benamor, where 50 golfers played a team tournament. Even golfers who could not participate generously increased the fund by paying their green fees.

In the evening, over 100 guests met at the Pousada de Tavira for a four-course Gala Dinner followed by dancing to the Big Band Algarve. Again, with the support of the Pousada and raffles, the fund received nearly 4,000 euros. The event ended in the early morning at the UBI disco.
With the addition of support from the sponsors, the event raised a total of 13,500 euros, which is now available for the underprivileged children in the Algarve.
