THIS YEAR’S Mamamaratona run for life marathon is due to take place on October 14 at 10am outside Expoarade in Portimão.
Organised by the Algarve Oncological Association (AOA), the marathon aims to raise money to help cancer sufferers in the Algarve and raise awareness about breast cancer.
Since the initiative was launched seven years ago, the money raised from the marathon has paid for a mobile breast cancer screening unit, which travels across the Algarve offering free screenings.
Raising money
Seminars in English and Portuguese were organised to explain the purpose of the unit and the dangers of breast cancer in smaller and more remote areas of the region. The Resident spoke to Maria de Lurdes from the AOA, who said: “The seminars were there to help people who would normally not have sufficient access to education about cancer”.
Women’s business association, Network, intends to enter as a group and Maria de Lurdes is hopeful that other companies and associations will follow suit. “It is actually much easier if people enter as a group in advance. That way we can reserve the right T-shirt size for people and the more the merrier”.
Participants can run or walk around either a 5km or 8km circuit and all money raised goes towards the AOA’s many initiatives and programmes to help cancer sufferers in the Algarve.
