Fears are mounting for the safety of drivers on the EN125 in Olhão where the overgrowth of trees and bushes is encroaching on the road.
The situation is described as particularly concerning on the stretch of road between Alfandanga and Murteira.
The overgrowth is said to be impairing drivers’ visibility and is also described as a fire hazard (this is an issue being widely discussed in the media as new legislation is in place demanding that councils and property owners clean their land by March 15 in a bid to prevent wildfires – see cover story).
The alarm was sounded by the parish union of Moncarapacho and Fuseta, which has accused Portugal’s infrastructure authority of “inaction” after multiple warnings that have fallen on deaf ears.
Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has allegedly denied responsibility, saying the matter concerns concession company Rotas do Algarve Litoral, which in turn claims it is not aware of the situation.
The union says it does not have the resources to carry out the ground clearance and thus feels “powerless”.
It finally decided to expose the situation in the media in hopes that something would be done.
