Saint Andrew’s success

Members of the Saint Andrew’s Society of the Algarve celebrated their most successful Saint Andrew’s Ball of recent years at the Le Meridien Hotel Penina.

Around 130 people were entertained for the 10th year running on November 27 with music from the Scottish group The Sounds of Islay and the piping of Malcolm MacGillivray, while the hotel provided a buffet for the guests.

Chieftain Doug McAdam welcomed guests to the ball and gave a brief history of the origins of Saint Andrew and how he became the Patron Saint of Scotland.

Doug McAdam said: “I was delighted to be able to welcome the British Consul Clive Jewell and give him the opportunity to introduce himself to those assembled before dancing the night away and a lusty rendition of Auld Land Syne.”

The next event from the Society will be the Burn’s Supper to be held at the Restaurante Ponte Romana in Silves on January 22. Further details about the event will be released.

Doug McAdam added: “Meanwhile, for those looking to retain or improve their Scottish dancing skills, don’t forget the dancing every Monday evening from 7.30pm at the International School in Porches.”
