Families, dogs and guests gathered at the Fatacil showground in Lagoa on September 18 for the annual Scruffts charity dog show.
A real community event for foreign and Portuguese residents, once again Scruffts proved to be a great success for all, whether they had two legs or four.
Alan Camplin-Smith, president of the APAA Algarve animal charity and organisers of the event, said: “Scruffts went very well and we have had many people congratulating us on the event. More than 600 people attended and although all the money has yet to be counted we expect our net profits to be higher this year than last.
“We were all very pleased with Scruffts, especially as we had more dogs entering classes this year and would like to thank everyone involved for all the support we have received.”
Professional photographer John Oliver made a special trip from Ourique in the Alentejo to offer his services free of charge at the show.
Dozens of companies showed their support by taking up a stand at Scruffts, including The Resident Group, which was also the official Media Partner of the event.

Always a winner with The Resident Group
The Resident Group was delighted to have several prizes to give away to visitors at Scruffts this year. We were kept very busy all day with the hundreds of people who found their way to our stand to know more about our publications, our work within the Algarve community and, of course, to win prizes!

Best Friend Photo Contest winners
An independent panel of judges, including professional photographer John Oliver, picked the three best photographs in the My Best Friend Photo Contest supported by the Algarve Resident.
The winners are: 1st Jane Hulshoff Pol, Moncarapacho with her photograph of Taj & Ollie, 2nd Colin Burgess, Lagos, with his photo of Jaz & Xen and 3rd Alan Wilkinson, Moncarapacho, with the photo of Lily & Edie.
Congratulations to the three who have won dog food from My Friend (Lagos), a picture in canvas from Gravanita (Lagoa) and a goodie bag. The overall winner will also receive a year’s subscription to the Algarve Resident.
Best Friend Photo Contest Public’s Vote winners
Congratulations to Colin Burgess (see picture of Jaz & Xen below) from Lagos and Pia Cross from Carvoeiro, whose dog photographs received the most votes from the public at Scruffts. Each has won a voucher for a Pet Grooming Session from Woof Woof Boutique & Spa in Portimão.
Public’s Vote prize draw winner
