SIXTEEN PEOPLE have died in Portugal during this summer’s official bathing season, six more than last year.
The figures for the June 1 to September 1 period were released by the navy on Monday.
Six of the deaths having occurred on supervised beaches and seven on unsupervised beaches, with another three at unsupervised riverside beaches.
Fifteen of the victims were men, many of whom drowned.
During this year’s official summer bathing season a total of 523 rescues were carried out.
