Resting amongst the serenity of the Algarve coast, the Reserva da Luz development is attracting both discerning investors and residents in search of tranquillity. Located in the picturesque village of Luz, in the municipality of Lagos, this project stands out for its exceptional setting, where each home seems to flow naturally towards the blue horizon. “I immediately realised that it was absolutely magnificent and one of the best places I had ever seen in the whole region,” says Gerry Fagan, chairman of DDM. Described by project manager Rui Mateus as “one of the few developments in the Algarve with such a privileged location”, the defining feature of Reserva da Luz lies in its land, “which extends directly into the sea”, he explains, also highlighting the view of Rocha Negra, “a striking geological formation” that makes the setting truly idyllic. For the project manager, the singular character of the development’s natural setting, which sits upon rocks rather than the typical dunes or cliffs of the Algarve, validates the interest of developers DDM in taking over the second phase of the Reserva da Luz project in 2022. “It had been on my horizon for, probably, 30 years,” Gerry Fagan admits.
Of the 40 plots that were part of the second development phase, only eight remain available for sale. In Fagan’s words, these constitute a rare opportunity: almost 2,000sqm of land per unit, designed so that each owner can “have a say in the entire process that will give rise to the place where they will live, probably, for the rest of their future and their retirement”. Just two minutes from a village with excellent leisure and dining facilities, Reserva da Luz also allows quick access to several towns in the western Algarve, the Sagres area, and various prestigious golf courses. For buyers seeking more than just a holiday home, the main advantage lies in the conditions the project creates. According to Rui Mateus, “the subdivision is defined with all the architectural parameters and constraints, and the licensing process is simple”. Buyers benefit from a robust technical and legal framework, with dedicated support from the start. “I try to guide the client during the process,” clarifies the project manager.
Architect Vítor Vilhena, who created projects for the last eight plots to assist clients, notes that these were designed “with some particular languages”, ensuring that the first floor of each home is reserved for the “social area, with the master suite, kitchen, and living room”, making the most of the sea view. The architect also emphasises that each plot is conceived as “a natural extension of the landscape”, where light and space guide the design.
With a wide-ranging and multinational client profile, from retired expats and investors to remote workers from Lisbon and Porto, the project developed by the architect offers flexibility and customisation. This is particularly relevant because, as Gerry Fagan stresses, one of the characteristics that makes the location so unique is precisely the fact that the concept moves away from that of a resort, rather resembling a residential community and maintaining proximity to services and leisure facilities in a discreet, high-quality setting. Beyond the surrounding landscape, which acts as the main character, other amenities were prioritised from the outset, such as a lift in every home to ensure long-term mobility – a major priority for DDM. It was also important to open a dialogue between the interior and exterior, connecting the balcony to the pool, green spaces, and light-filled lounge areas.

DDM’s motto, according to Fagan, is to define itself by legacy and, above all, by quality. “What we did was respect the environment and the view of the sea. It wasn’t as if we wanted to transform the space; we wanted to be the guardians of this place,” says Gerry Fagan. For those looking to live or invest in the Algarve and have an exacting eye for detail, Reserva da Luz is the answer: homes on large south-facing plots, privileged views, dedicated and personalised technical service, and a stunning natural setting. This philosophy of respecting the landscape and valuing the authenticity of the Algarve is, according its creators, what distinguishes Reserva da Luz from other developments in the region. Here, luxury is translated into discretion, peace, and the promise of a tranquil community. “You’re literally living on top of the sea, because the plots are right on top of the rocks,” concludes Rui Mateus.
