Seismology and tsunami studies

TEAMS FROM Lisbon University are undertaking field work to determine how many people are in the Algarve during August to ensure an accurate plan is in place in the event of any future natural disaster.

Two teams from Lisbon University’s geographical studies department carried out investigations until Friday for a project entitled Estudo do Risco Sísmico e Tsunamis do Algarve, study of the seismic and tsunami risks of the Algarve.

As well as the resident population, the teams questioned the non resident population who were staying at hotels, with friends and family and general day visitors.

Protection

This initiative is the result of a protocol set up in 2006 between the Autoridade Nacional de Protecção Civil (ANPC), the national authority of civil protection and the Centre for Geographical studies at Lisbon University, to organise a plan for the protection of all residents and visitors to the region.

Lagos Câmara has already undertaken a study for the city of Lagos which took three years worth of research including an inventory of all known earthquakes felt in the region in recorded history, the geological characteristics of the land on which the city is built, an analysis of the building structures in the city and social and demographic studies.

This study, which was carried out with the national institute of earth and space sciences has lead to a prevention plan and a preparation plan which the city is implementing to educate the population and authorities about the procedures to be taken in the event of one of these disasters.
