Sex-change lawyer stages university protest

Francisca Solange, 59, was born a man, became a lawyer and in 2014 realised her dream of undergoing ‘gender reassignment’ surgery.

But the bureaucracy involved in getting all the paperwork updated is still ongoing: Francisca is still ‘married’ to the wife with whom she had three children, and she is not ‘accepted’ in the Lawyers Association because she cannot prove the degree she took as a man is hers.

Her plight is highlighted today in tabloid Correio da Manhã, as Solange is due to stage a protest at Porto’s Lusíada University (where she studied) demanding “equality”.

The issue, she says, is one of “homophobic treatment that exists in society and its institutions”.
