Shark scare

SWIMMERS RAN for safety when a Monk shark made an appearance off the coast of Grândola in the Alentejo on Sunday.

The worried swimmers were in the sea at the beaches of Pego and Carvalhal. This shark, one of the inoffensive vegetarian species, was around five metres long and swam along the coast 20 metres from the shore.

“I had to explain to people that it wasn’t a dangerous shark. Many people were convinced that it was dangerous because of the size and shape of the fin that came out of the water,” said lifeguard, André Mendes.

After around 20 minutes, the shark swam back into deeper waters.
