A 22 YEAR-old student killed 10 people at the vocational college in the Finnish town of Kauhajoki where he was studying to be a chef, before shooting himself.
Matti Juhani Saari, who entered the college on Tuesday dressed in black and wearing a ski mask at around 11am and opened fire on his fellow students, later died at Tempere University hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.
On Monday, Matti Saari had been interviewed by police authorities after posting a video on the YouTube website last week, showing himself firing a gun.
The police, however, could not find enough evidence to revoke the student’s gun licence.
Following this shooting, Finland’s Prime Minister, Matti Vanhanen, declared Wednesday as a national day of mourning.
“We have to tighten the law significantly,” he said during a television interview, adding: “In terms of handguns that can easily be carried about, we have to think about whether they should be available for private people. In my opinion, they belong on shooting ranges.”
This attack echoed a shooting spree at a Finnish school last year which left nine dead, including the gunman, who had also posted an internet video.
