SHOTS WERE fired at the Expo Arade in Portimão on Friday night after Prime Minister José Sócrates had left a political party dinner.
According to the Portuguese news agency Lusa, seven bullet cartridges were found near the exhibition centre, with two shots having hit the building itself. A spokesman for José Sócrates told the press on Saturday that the Prime Minister had already left Expo Arade and was around 20km from the scene at the time of the shooting.
Paulo Rebelo, coordinator of the criminal investigation department of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Portimão said that the fire arm evidence that was recovered at the scene has been sent to a laboratory for ballistics analysis. “It is still too early to draw any conclusions,” he said.
Rui Pereira, the Minister for Internal Affairs spoke about the incident on Sunday, while presenting the regions summer security plans in Olhão. “This type of behaviour is inadmissible and the PJ are looking into the matter,” he said.
A Polícia Judiciária spokesman told The Resident: “We cannot release any details about the incident but can confirm that we are investigating the matter.”
