AN AMAZING 60,000 euros was raised on Saturday night at the McKenzie Sir Bobby Robson Golf Classic in aid of the Refúgio Aboim Ascenção, a children’s home in Faro.

The golf tournament and gala dinner that followed took place at Vila Sol Spa and Golf Resort, with more than 250 people in attendance. A prize giving for the winners of the golf tournament and a raffle, with the chance to win 500 euros, were well received.

With many celebrities at the event, including footballing legends Andy Brazil and Peter Shilton, the evening was even more star-studded. Those in attendance said it was a great success and was capped off with an entertaining comedy show.

Children’s home

The money raised will go directly to Refúgio Aboim Ascenção and the director of the home, Luís Villas-Boas, made an emotional speech about their plight to help children live a normal life. He said that through charity events such as this, the home has become one of the most successful in Europe, which means that children are given the care they need to be able to stand proudly on their own or to find loving homes with adoptive families.  He told The Resident: “I feel so honoured that Sir Bobby has been helping us to, not only raise money, but to raise awareness about the dangers children face.”

Growing success

Sir Bobby Robson also spoke to The Resident about the charity event and its growing success: “I think it is great that all these people are here to support this charity. I am proud to put my name to this and tonight in particular has been great.”

There were many items auctioned off on the night, including a golf club signed by Sir Bobby Robson, Vila Sol spa treatments and free stays at the hotel and a signed Chelsea shirt.

Sir Bobby Robson said he could not wait until next year, where he hoped the event would be bigger and better than ever.
