GNR police seized 1.2 million smuggled cigarettes, the largest haul this year, near Portimão on August 21 during a routine operation.
The cigarettes were found when officers stopped a Spanish registered tow vehicle and a trailer, where the cigarettes had been hidden. According to police, they have a retail value of €212,000.
“The vehicles were registered in the name of a foreign man, aged 54. During the inspection, the driver appeared to be very nervous which led us to want to see the contents of the trailer, where the contraband tobacco was found,” said a spokesman from the GNR. The man was arrested and is due to appear in court.
