STONE SCULPTURES created during an artist’s symposium held at the beginning of July are now on show at the main square in Aljezur.
The pieces were created during the first Encontro de Escultura ao Vivo, a symposium of stone sculpture artists, between July 2 and 12 on the village sports field.
Jorge Leal, one of the youngest artists participating at the event, told The Resident he was very pleased with the way things worked out during the two weeks of this first event. “For a first symposium of sculpture artists it was a great experience that I would like to repeat,” he said.
The event, organised by Aljezur Câmara and sponsored by several local companies, allowed artists to trade experiences but mainly helped to educate the local community about their art, through dedicated workshops. Jorge Leal was born and lives in Lagos. The Algarve region was also represented by Joel Correia, who was born in Paris, but is now involved in a studio with Leal in Lagos.
Other well known sculptors were Moisés from Lisbon, João Antero from Ovar, a city in the north of Portugal; and Abílio Febra, who travelled from Meceira, a city near Leiria, in central Portugal.
