Suspicions of foul play as operator of heavy machinery found ‘carbonised’ in Monchique

Body of Fidelino Correia discovered “completely unrecognisable” outside burnt wreckage of car

PJ police are investigating the mysterious death of a 70-year-old ‘operator of heavy machinery’, found burnt to death outside the equally-carbonised wreckage of his car on a road leading to Monchique in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to reports, suspicions are that the fire may have been started on purpose (possibly to confuse any subsequent investigation).

The victim, Fidelino Correio of nearby Monchicão, was well known in the area, and “exhibited a lot of money when he made payments in cafés and restaurants”, explains tabloid Correio da Manha.

He had been at a café close to Monchique before he was discovered dead, says the paper. But the body was not carrying any identification documents, or a wallet/ money, increasing police suspicions.

For now, as investigations continue, authorities await the results of an autopsy. ND
