Syringe scare

A YOUNG boy stepped on a syringe last Wednesday (July 25) while he was playing in the sand in front of Sasha Beach, Praia da Rocha. He was taken to hospital where he underwent medical tests.

The six-year-old was one of a group of children on a school outing and the headmistress said she thought it was very strange that there would be a syringe in the sand on such a popular beach, especially in the summer.

Window period

The boy was transported to Portimão SAP and then Barlavento hospital where blood tests were conducted. The results were clear but the family of the boy must wait a year before he is completely out of the woods, as some viruses or infections can develop later.

He will have more tests in one month, then in six months and the final exams should be conducted at this time next year.  The family are said to be very nervous about having to wait a year before he is cleared of any potential infection. Allegedly, the boy has been traumatised by the experience and refuses to go back to the beach.

His mother is considering presenting a case to the Polícia Judiciária (Judicial Police) but she does not believe they will get far with the investigation or if they will be able to identify the person who left the syringe on the beach.
