Fake emails promise tax refunds but are scams looking to steal data, says tax authority
As IRS refund season is in full swing, Portugal’s Tax and Customs Authority (AT) is warning the public about a new wave of scam emails disguised as official communications.
The emails look official, use the AT logo, and tempt recipients with a message that seems too good to ignore, such as “You may be entitled to a tax refund.”
But the tax office is warning that these emails are fake and should be ignored, as they attempt to get taxpayers to click on a malicious link to “reclaim” their refund. In reality, it’s just a phishing attempt to steal personal and financial information.
The AT is urging all taxpayers to consult the official information on information security available through the ‘Portal das Finanças’ (Finance Portal).
