Europride celebrated ‘bigtime’ for first time in Portugal
For the first time in Portugal, Europride brought together thousands of people on Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade, to march for the rights of the LGBTI+ community and demand the right to love without prejudice.
Under the motto “Proudly Yourselves”, Europride 2025 called for the celebration of authenticity, unity and love, and, according to Lusa, “this was seen on the faces of the thousands of people who walked down the Lisbon avenue, carrying posters and the traditional colorful flag.
“Whether on foot or in one of the allegorical trucks that went down Avenida da Liberdade, the joy of the participants was contagious, waving, dancing or singing to the sound of the music that echoed from the speakers.
EuroPride 2025 was organized by Variações – LGBTI Trade and Tourism Association of Portugal and supported by Turismo de Portugal and the Lisbon City Council.
Speaking to journalists, José Marquina, president of Variações, said it was a source of pride to have Europride in Portugal, stressing that it is an important event for the demand and celebration of the rights of the LGBTI+ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex).
He mentioned the need to ensure that “no steps are taken backwards” – giving the example of the situation in Hungary, a European country where the LGBTI+ community is being criminalized.
After celebrating along the central Avenida da Liberdade, the march ended at Terreiro do Paço.
