TWO YOUNG Portuguese swimmers will swim from Sines Bay to Lagoa de Santo André in Costa Alentejana tomorrow (Saturday), as part of their training for an attempt to cross the English Channel.
Nuno Vicente, 28, and Miguel Arrobas, 32, have been training for several months to achieve their goal of beating Batista Pereira, the only Portuguese swimmer to cross the channel. He did it twice, in 1954 and 1959.
Tomorrow’s swim is aimed at proving to the Channel Swimming Association that they are capable of the effort involved in the crossing of the cold waters of the channel.
They must show they can cope in the water for six hours at least, with temperatures of around 17 to 19 degrees, similar to the English Channel where the international challenge is to be held in next year.
Miguel Arrobas, a lawyer, represented Portugal in the Barcelona Olympic Games and has nine records in his career as a swimmer.
Nuno Vicente works for a railway company as a civil engineer and won the European Champion of open waters in 2005.
