At a time when tourism is at an all-time high in Portugal, the UK’s Telegraph newspaper has published a list of 22 reasons why “everyone is going to Portugal right now”.
“This week the country reported gleefully on another record year for overseas arrivals. Just over 12.7 million foreigners visited the country in 2017 – up 12% year-on-year,” the newspaper says before listing why it believes Portugal is so popular these days.
Lisbon’s “timeworn charm” and Porto’s “medieval heart and contemporary buzz” are listed as the first reasons, followed by the country’s famous wine and the “Harry Potter connection” that exists at Porto’s stunning Lello book store.
Portugal’s ‘pastel de nata’ custard tarts are described as unlike any other, and the country’s weather, nightlife, “opulent hotels”, beaches, waves, secret cities and Fado bars are all praised as stand-alone reasons to come to Portugal.
The country is also described as one of the most affordable for UK tourists, while Madeira, the Vasco da Gama bridge, Braga’s municipal stadium “carved out of a rock” and Évora’s chapel “made out of bones” are among other highlights.
