Dear Editor,
I would like to suggest the formation of a United States or United Kingdom of Iberia. Portugal has a huge administrative apparatus for just 10 million people. It is economically at least 10 years behind Spain which emerged from its dictatorship roughly around the same time.
Spain has areas who want to be autonomous and not “Spanish” with different languages. Can’t this all be used to everyone’s favour? What about taking the best of the UK’s and USA’s systems and create a union of states with a central government which deals with supra-regional issues and leave issues that can be handled better regionally to the states?
This would be efficient, making government lean and effective on a regional local (Portugal, the Basque country, Catalonia…). With their economic ties to the lusophone and Spanish-speaking world and governed well, the ‘USI’ could be an economic powerhouse by 2020.
