Another hurricane threatens eastern seaboard

TROPICAL STORM Wilma stalled over the warm waters of the north-western Caribbean early on Tuesday, where forecasters said it could strengthen into a hurricane before potentially menacing the US Gulf Coast this coming weekend.

Wilma entered the history books on Monday, becoming the Atlantic hurricane season’s 21st named storm before dawn, tying the record set in 1933 and exhausting the list of storm names. “I think the message is that the season is certainly not over. People in the Gulf Coast are going to have to watch Wilma,” said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Centre in Miami.

By Tuesday morning, Wilma had reached sustained winds near 65 mph. It was centred about 260 miles south-southeast of Grand Cayman. Forecasters said it had barely moved since late on Monday, but it was expected to gradually turn to the west and northwest.
