Dear Editor,
I would like to relate the following incident in Vilamoura that took place last week. This is only because I would like to warn other visitors and residents who may be unaware of the dangers in what seems a very safe environment.
I was walking in the area at the back of the Vilamoura marina just after midnight (March 22) and a group of approximately six youths came running at me from behind, knocking me to the ground. I presume with the intent of taking phone, wallet etc.
Well, at 55, you do have a natural sense of self preservation so I managed to get up and beat them off as I began to run away. After following me for several metres, they gave up and thankfully walked away. I consider myself lucky that I was not kicked more and only have a few bruises to show.
Having spoken to my Portuguese friends, they said it was pointless telling the police for three reasons. First, I couldn’t identify any of them. Second, they didn’t actually manage to steal anything and, finally, the police know this goes on all the time at the back of the marina.
In addition, as they were probably all under 18, the courts couldn’t touch them.
So I’m afraid this is the best I can do to help your readers and hopefully avoid this happening to anyone else. My advice would be stay clear of any parts of Vilamoura behind the marina (probably after 9pm) and definitely don’t walk home alone at night.
