Volunteers clear 200kg of trash from Portimão beauty spot

Cleanup took place at João d’Arens

Local association Teia d’Impulsos and local gym EPIC Fitness led a cleanup initiative at Portimão’s João d’Arens beauty spot last Saturday (June 7).

The event, part of the association’s ‘Arade Azul’ environmental project, saw a small group of volunteers collect around 200 kilos of rubbish, including plastic waste, glass bottles, tin cans, and even an old tyre.

“The amount of waste found is proof of the urgent need to raise awareness about the impact of human behaviour on the environment,” Teia d’Impulsos said in a statement.

The dumping of rubbish at João d’Arens has been worsening, the association warns, adding that such actions “compromise the balance of local ecosystems and negatively affect the flora and fauna.”

The cleanup was also held with backing from the municipal council of Portimão and EMARP, the municipal waste and water management company.

João d’Arens is one of Portimão’s most beloved coastal areas and the last untouched stretch of coast in the municipality, having come under the threat of development in recent years before citizens banded together to oppose the plans, which ultimately fell through.
