QUERCUS, A Portuguese environmental organisation, and Aguas do Algarve, the regional state owned water company, are developing a project called Projecto EcoCasa-Agua, EcoHome-water.
This project aims to make consumers aware of the need to reduce water consumption. The water consumption of volunteer families will be monitored throughout a year, helping to identify the different domestic uses of water.
The trial starts on October 1 and runs until September 30, 2008. Changes in seasons will also be evaluated to identify any changes in water usage.
After the first phase, plans are to ration the water and the families will be encouraged to adhere to this through personal and direct advice.
It is hoped that the families’ behaviour towards water consumption will change after this project. This water saving project is part of a larger project that was started in 2004 by Quercus to promote energy saving at home.
For more information, Quercus has created a Portuguese website at www.ecocasa.org, which will contain information gathered throughout the project as well as energy saving advice.
