HOLIDAYMAKERS WHO have travelled to Portugal with tour operator XL are being advised to contact their travel agent or the offices of the Air Travel Organiser’s Licenses (ATOL) for information on how to return back to the UK after all operations were suspended involving the British holiday company.
Earlier today, Friday, September 12, XL Leisure group Plc, XL Airways Limited, Kosmar Villa Holidays Plc and other companies under the XL umbrella went into administration.
Reasons cited were “volatile fuel prices and the economic downturn.”
A statement released by the administrators adds: “All flights operated by the companies have been immediately cancelled and aircraft grounded.”
Holidaymakers who are currently in Portugal on a holiday booked through an XL company have been advised to stay in their hotels and villas.
“In most cases, your accommodation provider will be paid direct by the Civilian Aviation Authority (CAA) so you will not incur any additional expenses.”
Flights are being arranged by the CAA and information will be given to holiday reps with any details of changes to flight arrangements.
Those who booked their holiday via xl.com or through the XL call centre have been told: “Unfortunately, customers of xl.com and XL call centres are not ATOL protected. Consequently you will be ineligible for a refund from ATOL in respect of your flight.”
Customers of xl.com and the XL call centre are being asked to arrange their own flights back to the UK and are advised to check the ATOL website, www.atol.org.uk for further advice.
EasyJet airline are offering anyone effected by the administration of XL flights back to the UK for 75 pounds.
This includes all taxes and other fees and is only available until September 19. For further information about this offer please call the EasyJet line for Portugal on 808 204 204.
