More modern and efficient, Baptista Supermarket continues to improve under new leadership.
With the arrival of Beatriz Batista, there have also been some changes that have given Baptista Supermarket an even better-structured service that is closer to the customer. True to its high standards towards the community of residents and visitors to Praia da Luz, the space has been renovated and is now more dynamic. “Change is fundamental, both in the expansion and diversification of the offer and quality and in the inclusion of new products,” emphasised the new manager. Several areas have seen improvements. For efficiency, the pastry section now works on a self-service basis; to guarantee the highest quality and the freshest meat, Baptista has also taken over the operations of the butcher’s counter (previously operated by a different company); the café, which is also operated by the team, also offers more space to sit and relax. The outdoor terrace, which has now been extended, is great for sunbathing and enjoying one of the pastries or savoury snacks prepared daily on site.
Well-stocked on both national, and international products, the supermarket ensures diversity and excellence, whilst the careful and personalised Delivery Service has an increased offer. The website has also been redesigned and modernised, making it faster, simpler, and more intuitive. “We always have an extra concern for the customer, endeavouring to provide the best possible service, both in the physical space and online,” Beatriz stated.
With the new management comes a visionary approach that connects the past and future of a family with a history linked to commerce. The business began with a grocery shop in Lagos, opened in the 1920s by Beatriz’s great-grandparents, which operated until the 70s. In 1960, her grandparents opened the first Baptista Supermarket in Rua da Calheta, in Praia da Luz. Twelve years later, the success of the business made it necessary to expand, so they moved to the Luztur building and, in 1999, opened the third and current space. “My grandparents made decisions and took risks together. Success is the result of a real team effort,” Beatriz emphasised.
The management passed from her grandfather to her uncle, Rui Batista. After 25 years of hard work and commitment from Rui, it is now Beatriz’s turn, who, like her uncle, used to run through the aisles as a child. “I used to spend a lot of time here during the holidays and would help carry the trolleys and do the restocking,” she recalls. The family’s journey has been marked by ambition and dedication, which is reflected in a reliable, consistent brand that is constantly innovating – a commitment that Beatriz is keen to maintain. To achieve this, she relies on her employees, who stand out for their resilience and team spirit. “They had the strength to keep up with change. It’s not easy, but they’ve really risen to the occasion,” she underlined.
In addition to all the new features, achieved in just the last few months, Baptista Supermarket will soon have even more that will make life easier for the supermarket’s customers living in Paia da Luz. “We’re working to provide a more helpful and personalised response to the community,” revealed Beatriz, without hiding her excitement at keeping her grandparents’ dream alive.
Born in Lisbon, she spent her childhood and adolescence in Beja, later moving to Lisbon for her studies. Over the years, she has collaborated with various social projects, and her determination and cunning led her to work in the catering and teaching sectors. In 2020, she moved to Cambridge, England, for five years and graduated in Project Management from ILX, whilst working in schools with children with learning difficulties, an “incredible experience with a completely different reality and approach to education”.
Although taking on this responsibility and challenge came about spontaneously, the motivation to give her best and the emotional attachment to the supermarket, together with her skills and qualities, give Beatriz everything she needs to ensure success. “I never thought I’d work here; it was a nice surprise in life. But I came with this desire to take over and boost the family business and bring about rapid change,” she stressed, adding: “I’m very ambitious and I see a bright future for Baptista, both in its supermarket version and in all the others that we’re planning and that may emerge.”
