Two years ago, Quinta do Lago was ravaged by a wildfire that was truly terrifying. Since then, a lot of dead trees and undergrowth have literally been left to dry up and become serious fire hazards.
This far, the Algarve has escaped the ravages of wildfires that are consuming territory in the north and centre – but locals in the so-called ‘golden triangle’ are uneasy.
Sending us images, one reports that he has been to the police and civil protection authorities, but there has been “no action”.
“The whole forest towards Quinta do Lago and towards Dunas Douradas and Vale do Lobo are full of dead bone dry trees”, said another. The fire of two years ago could so easily happen again.
For now, we are just leaving these images here, in the hope that authorities do ‘act’: a lot of criticism surrounding wildfires this year has centred on the lack of enforcement when it comes to annual ‘mandatory’ cleaning of land. It is not meant to be mandatory for some, and not for others.
The top image is “what lines the road to Ancão beach”. In other words, no one can argue that ‘you can’t see it’. The images below are just to show it is not a case of one screenshot.
