Commuters in the Algarve say they are reaching their breaking point. Daily train delays, breakdowns, and last-minute cancellations are making the region’s rail service increasingly unreliable, and national rail operator Comboios de Portugal (CP) admits it can’t guarantee a solution anytime soon.
For many residents travelling between towns like Portimão, Silves, and Albufeira to jobs in Faro, Olhão, or Tavira, riding the train has become a nightmare. Some commuters report taking five hours reaching their workplace or returning home, while arriving on time has become the exception.
“Last week there were only four trains running — the rest were all in the workshop,” one frustrated passenger told Portuguese broadcaster SIC.
According to CP, a number of trains have been taken out of service due to mechanical failures, with several more undergoing major overhauls as part of a maintenance plan. The company says it provides replacement bus services when possible but admits that doesn’t always happen, either because bus companies can’t respond quickly enough or simply lack available vehicles.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited electrification of the Faro–Vila Real de Santo António line is still pending certification. CP says once the system is activated, it will adjust the rolling stock assigned to the Algarve.
What’s certain is that frustration continues to grow among regular train passengers, many of whom have no other alternative.
Last year, CP transported around 2.7 million passengers on the Algarve line.
