Aljezur municipal pools close indefinitely

Plethora of issues jeopardising the safety of users and staff has forced the closure of the pools

Aljezur’s municipal swimming pools have been closed once again, but this time the municipal council says they’re staying shut until every fault is fully fixed.

After repeated reopenings and sudden closures, the municipality admits the situation has become unsafe for users and staff and is now ordering a full technical audit of the entire building.

The list of issues is long, starting with a new dehumidifier which is needed after humidity levels shot above legal limits. The ultraviolet disinfection system must be assessed and repaired, and new automatic chlorine and pH controllers must be purchased. Repairs are also needed on the pool’s boiler no.1 and pumps no.1 and no.3, as well as the solar energy system, expansion joints on the pool floors and compensation tanks. Further investments include a new exhaust system for gas buildup, a new heat dissipator and deep cleaning for the ventilation ducts, plus several other faults that have been identified, the council says.

For now, there is no reopening date. The council says it is working “as quickly as possible” to resolve these issues and insists the pools will only reopen when they meet every safety and hygiene requirement.
