The ambulance was parked outside the Alzheimer’s Unit in Castro Marim with the engine running
A patient from the Alzheimer’s Unit of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Castro Marim managed to take off in an ambulance that had been left parked outside the facility with the engine running.
The man entered the vehicle and drove away – emergency lights flashing – at around 9pm when firefighters were preparing to transport another patient, a GNR police source told Lusa news agency.
The patient managed to drive several kilometres before being intercepted by authorities near the salt flats of Castro Marim.
Fortunately, no injuries or property damage were reported, and the ambulance was safely recovered and returned to the fire brigade.
